Strong Like A Mama: How to Cultivate a Strong Mindset

HeyMama How to Cultivate a Strong Mindset

When you hear the word strong - what comes up for you? Is it fortitude, a mindset, or a body type? To us, strong means healthy and powerful – both physically and mentally. This year’s 7th annual Strong Like a Mama event is about effective ways to find our inner strength, and release that power into the world to enact positive change.

As we approach SLAM, we’re diving into not only physical strength, but asking - what is mental strength (not to be confused with mental health), and how do we work on it?

Mental strength is the cognitive and emotional skill of reframing negative thoughts and adverse circumstances. Being mentally strong, or mentally tough, helps us resist both internal and external influences that weaken our self-confidence and well-being. (betterup.com)

The benefits of mental strength are:

  1. Less stress

  2. More motivation

  3. Less anxiety

  4. Resilience

To achieve mental strength, there are several things we can do:

  1. Radical self acceptance - This means accepting and appreciating all of your facets - your strengths, challenges, and everything that makes you complete.

  2. Positive self talk - Reframing negative thoughts starts with ourselves. Learning to use positive self talk kickstarts your skills for reframing other negative thoughts.

  3. Journaling - This is a great way to get in touch with all of your thoughts and feelings.  Strength is not about hiding bad feelings, but about acknowledging them without letting them derail us.

  4. Meditation - The classic mental exercise! Meditation is known to help with better focus, improved self-awareness and lower anxiety.
